In 1934 Don Gulden, who was an assistant buyer at the Emporium Department Store, decided he wanted to be in business for himself. He opened the 19th Hole Tavern across the street from Keller Golf Course. The first night he opened, Don had to borrow $5 from his sister in order to make change.

In 1954 he was forced to relocate when the Highway Department widened Highway 61. Don moved the building a couple miles up the road (to it's current location) and refurbished the business. It was a popular spot until the City of Maplewood incorporated only municipal liquor. Don's business then became a private club and was renamed Club Suburban. It continued to be named Club Suburban for the next 8 years, was remodeled and a beautiful patio was built. When the City of Maplewood decided to issue private liquor licenses, the Club Surburban changed it's name to Gulden's Pied Piper.

In the summer of 1968, fire destroyed half the building. After seeing 30 years of Don's life go up in smoke, he decided to stay open. Within one week, he was serving drinks on the patio under a tent. The St. Paul Open was right around the corner and Gulden's Pied Piper was a popular place for the golfers. By December, he was open for business again, but it was a smaller version.

Gulden's became a landmark in Maplewood. Don and Ev Gulden had a knack for hosting theme parties; Christmas in July, Hot Pants Party, Hard Times Party along with a Chinese New Year Party.

Other Key Milestones:

  • In 1974 Don Gulden sold his business to Doyle and Joan Biggs and partner John Troje.
  • Another fire in 1983
  • In 1984 rebuilt (twice the size as the 19th hole) with a name change to Gulden's Roadhouse. No more fires took place since insurance policies required restaurants to have operating sprinkler systems.
  • In 1990 Doyle and Joan Biggs sold Gulden's Roadhouse.
